How to fit Desso carpet tiles
Desso tiles are lovely to lay — dense, dimensionally stable and very well-behaved. Their guide is strict about one thing in particular: never start against a wall, and never end up with a skinny cut at the edge.

- Carpet tile tackifier and a paint roller
- Sharp utility knife and spare blades
- Metal straight edge
- Tape measure and chalk line
- Knee kicker (helpful, not essential)
- Knee pads
Before you start
Give them 48 hours
Desso want the tiles in the room for at least two days at 15–30°C before you lay them. If you can't unpack them, open the sides of the boxes so air can get in, and don't stack them more than 10 boxes high.
Same batch in the same room
If you've got tiles from more than one batch, keep each batch to its own room. Don't mix them in one space.
Check for damage first
Look the tiles over before you cut anything. Once they're down, a visible defect is much harder to sort out.
Underfloor heating
Turn it down at least 48 hours before, and bring it back up slowly 48 hours afterwards. Never above 27°C at the surface.
How to fit Desso carpet tiles, step by step
Find the centre of the room
Desso are blunt about this: never start against a wall. Work out the centre of the room, snap a chalk line each way so you've got a cross, and lay from there.
Dry-lay a row first
Before any adhesive goes down, lay a loose row of tiles out to each wall. If the edge tiles would come out as thin slivers, shift your centre line over by half a tile.
Fix the tiles down
Roll the tackifier over the whole floor, not in strips. Then leave it until it's completely dry and tacky — if it's still wet, the tiles will bond permanently and you'll never lift one out.
Check which way the tiles go
Check the arrow on the back of each tile. Desso support all-one-direction, half-tile offset (brick or ashlar), every-other-tile-turned (quarter turn) and random. The right method for your range is printed on the box.
Work outwards from the middle
Start at the centre and build out in a staircase shape rather than straight rows. It keeps everything square and stops small errors adding up across the room.
Butt them up gently
Tiles should touch with no gap, but don't force them tight. Brush the pile back as you lay each one so nothing gets trapped in the joint.
Cut the edge tiles
Cut the tile so the manufactured edge butts up to the last full tile and the cut edge goes against the skirting. Never leave a cut smaller than 10cm.
Finish off
Fit a threshold strip in any doorway, vacuum the floor and put the furniture back. Carpet tiles can be walked on straight away.

The Desso bits that catch people out
Nothing smaller than 10cm
This is Desso's firm rule. Any cut tile at a wall or doorway must be bigger than 10cm. Plan your centre lines around it.
Planks need 10cm between end joints
If you're laying the plank format, keep the end joints at least 10cm apart from row to row.
Give it six weeks
Desso say a newly laid carpet tile floor takes six to eight weeks to fully settle. Slight pile marks from the packaging will disappear.
Stairs need a nosing
Desso tiles work on stairs, but not over the nose itself — you need a metal or rubber stair nosing, with tiles stuck permanently to the risers.
Mistakes to avoid
- Starting against a wall instead of the centre.
- Leaving cut tiles smaller than 10cm at the edges.
- Laying into tackifier that hasn't dried — it becomes a permanent bond.
- Mixing dye batches in one room.
- Judging the finished look on day one. Give it a few weeks to settle.
Desso fitting questions, answered
Do Desso carpet tiles need adhesive?
They're laid into a tackifier — a coat rolled over the floor that dries tacky. It holds the tiles but lets you lift them again. Make sure it's fully dry first.
How small can the edge tiles be with Desso?
Nothing under 10cm. Smaller cuts than that tend to lift, especially in doorways.
Which way round do Desso tiles go?
Look at the arrow on the back and check the box — Desso print the recommended laying method on the packaging for each range.
Can Desso carpet tiles go over underfloor heating?
Yes, as long as the floor surface stays at or below 27°C. Turn the heating down 48 hours before and bring it back up slowly 48 hours after.
Why does my new Desso floor look slightly uneven?
Pile pressure marks from packing and transport are normal and settle out over six to eight weeks of normal use and vacuuming.
