How to fit Milliken carpet tiles
Milliken's TractionBack tiles have a grippy backing built in, so a lot of their floors go down with no adhesive whatsoever. The catch is that the backing grips whatever's on the floor — so if that's dust, it grips the dust.

What you’ll need to fit Milliken carpet tiles
- Sharp utility knife and BRAND NEW blades
- Metal straight edge
- Tape measure and chalk line
- Mop and bucket (yes, really)
- Carpet tile tackifier — only if your tiles aren't TractionBack
- Knee pads
Before you start
Mop the floor
This is the big one for TractionBack. Sweeping isn't enough — Milliken specifically ask for a proper mop, because construction dust stops the backing gripping.
Let them settle
24 hours in the room, somewhere between 15°C and 32°C.
Take up old vinyl and lino
TractionBack shouldn't go over existing vinyl or linoleum. And never sand or grind old black adhesive — older ones can contain asbestos. Leave that to a specialist.
Don't stack them back to back
If you're storing tiles part-way through a job, don't stack them face-to-face or back-to-back — the grippy backings cling together.
How to fit Milliken carpet tiles, step by step
Find the centre of the room
Start near the centre of the room, at a point that gives you the biggest possible cut tiles at the edges. Snap a chalk line parallel to the main wall and a second at exactly 90° to it. Check it's square using the 3-4-5 method.
Dry-lay a row first
Before any adhesive goes down, lay a loose row of tiles out to each wall. If the edge tiles would come out as thin slivers, shift your centre line over by half a tile.
Fix the tiles down
If you've got TractionBack tiles, you don't. They grip the floor on their own — just make sure it's properly clean. For other Milliken backings, roll on a carpet tile tackifier and wait for it to go clear and tacky.
Check which way the tiles go
The arrows on the back show pile direction. All the same way, every other one turned 90°, or offset by half a tile. Milliken have one nice tip: on a corridor or walkway, point the arrows ALONG the direction people walk, not across it.
Work outwards from the middle
Start at the centre and build out in a staircase shape rather than straight rows. It keeps everything square and stops small errors adding up across the room.
Butt them up gently
Tiles should touch with no gap, but don't force them tight. Brush the pile back as you lay each one so nothing gets trapped in the joint.
Cut the edge tiles
Put the tile you're cutting on top of the last full tile, then a third tile on top pushed against the skirting. Mark along its edge and cut from the face with a brand new blade — a worn blade frays the edge. Cut edge goes to the wall.
Slide, don't drop
Milliken want each tile slid into place from the side rather than dropped in, so you don't trap yarn in the joint. Then press both joints down firmly with your hand.
Finish off
Fit a threshold strip in any doorway, vacuum the floor and put the furniture back. Carpet tiles can be walked on straight away.

The Milliken bits that catch people out
Cut from the face, not the back
Most brands tell you to cut through the backing. Milliken want you to cut from the top with a brand new blade — worn blades leave a frayed edge.
The 11-tile check
A neat trick from Milliken's own guide: measure across 11 tiles. It should come to about 5.5 metres. If it's noticeably short, you're squeezing the tiles too tight and the joints will peak up.
TractionBack can be walked on immediately
Once the perimeter is in and locked, you can put furniture straight back.
Wheeled chairs
In an area with heavy wheeled traffic, Milliken suggest using a release adhesive rather than relying on the TractionBack alone.
Mistakes to avoid
- Not mopping the floor before laying TractionBack tiles.
- Cutting with a blunt blade and getting a fluffy edge.
- Laying TractionBack over existing vinyl or lino.
- Squeezing tiles too tight — check with the 11-tile measurement.
- Sanding old black adhesive. Get it checked for asbestos instead.
Milliken fitting questions, answered
What is Milliken TractionBack?
It's a backing with a grippy surface built into it, so the tiles hold themselves to the floor without any adhesive. It's genuinely no-glue, but the floor has to be properly clean for it to work.
Do Milliken carpet tiles need glue?
TractionBack ones don't. Their other backings use a standard carpet tile tackifier rolled on and left to go tacky.
Why do I have to mop the floor first?
Because TractionBack grips whatever it touches. If there's a layer of fine dust, it grips the dust rather than the floor, and the tiles creep.
Can I lift Milliken tiles up again later?
Yes — that's one of the advantages. Lift a damaged tile out and drop a spare in.
Which way do Milliken tiles go?
Follow the arrows on the back. In a corridor, point them along the walking direction rather than across it — it wears better and looks cleaner.
