Lino, linoleum, Marmoleum…

Marmoleum vs linoleum: same floor, fancier name

Here's the short version. Linoleum is the flooring category. Marmoleum is Forbo's brand of linoleum, and easily the most specified in the UK. So every Marmoleum floor is a linoleum floor, but not every linoleum floor gets to call itself Marmoleum. Think Hoover and vacuum cleaner, but for floors.

Quick myth-bust: modern linoleum is nothing like the old "lino" people remember curling up at the edges of a 1970s kitchen. Today's linoleum is a completely different product, a high-performance commercial floor made mainly from natural raw materials (linseed oil, rosin, wood flour and ground limestone) on a natural jute backing, with a tough factory-applied finish. It's hard-wearing, easy to clean and naturally low-carbon, which is why it's specified in schools, hospitals and public buildings across the UK. Think of it as the floor equivalent of a sensible pair of shoes that somehow still looks great.

The catch? Linoleum is a very different beast to vinyl, and it takes a specialist linoleum fitter to install it properly. That's where we come in. DCTUK supplies and installs Forbo Marmoleum and commercial linoleum flooring nationwide, with our own experienced Marmoleum installers. We also bring the same fitting service that's laid thousands of commercial floors across the UK.

Why are Marmoleum fitters so hard to find?

Linoleum is a natural product. It has moods.

Plenty of flooring fitters will happily lay vinyl all day. Ask them about Marmoleum and you'll often get a sharp intake of breath. Here's why specialist linoleum installation matters, and why our fitters don't flinch.

It moves after it's unrolled

Sheet linoleum can grow in length and shrink in width as it relaxes. Experienced Marmoleum fitters acclimatise it, plan the cuts and allow for it. Inexperienced ones find out the hard way.

Hot-welded seams

Commercial Marmoleum installations have their seams grooved and hot welded with a matching weld rod, for a sealed, hygienic, near-invisible join. It's a proper skill, not a YouTube tutorial.

Unforgiving of bad subfloors

Lino shows every bump underneath it. We survey, test and prep properly: moisture testing, smoothing compounds and DPMs where needed. That way your floor looks like a showroom, not the surface of the moon.

Coved skirting & hygienic finishes

Schools, kitchens and healthcare often need coved skirting with the lino formed up the wall. There are no dirt traps, and the infection-control team is very happy.

It needs to "see the light"

New linoleum can arrive with a yellowish drying room film from the linseed oil curing. It's normal and fades in daylight. Our team will tell you that before you panic, not after.

Designs, borders & inlays

Marmoleum is brilliant for colour-zoned layouts, wayfinding, logos and inlays. We plan them on the free site survey and cut them on site with precision. No wonky stripes.

Commercial projects of 100m²+ only

Our Marmoleum installation service is built for commercial jobs: classrooms, wards, corridors, offices and whole buildings. Working on something smaller? You'll get our best prices by buying linoleum online and using your own fitter.

Marmoleum & linoleum installation FAQs

Is Marmoleum the same as linoleum?
Yes. Marmoleum is Forbo's brand name for its linoleum flooring. All Marmoleum is linoleum, but not all linoleum is Marmoleum. It's made mainly from natural raw materials such as linseed oil, rosin, wood flour and limestone on a jute backing.
Do you install Marmoleum nationwide?
Yes. We supply and install Forbo Marmoleum and linoleum flooring for commercial projects anywhere in mainland UK, starting with a free site survey. Request a quote and tell us where the project is.
Is there a minimum project size for Marmoleum installation?
Our Marmoleum and linoleum installation service is for commercial projects of 100m² or more. For smaller areas, you'll get the best price by buying linoleum online.
Why is it hard to find Marmoleum fitters?
Linoleum behaves differently to vinyl. Sheets can grow in length and shrink in width as they settle, seams need hot welding, and the subfloor must be perfectly prepared. It takes specialist training and experience, so many general flooring fitters don't offer it. Ours do, nationwide.
Can I see the Marmoleum colour range before I order?
Yes. Our London showroom at 151 Goswell Road, Clerkenwell holds the full Forbo Marmoleum swatch book collection, so you can compare colours and ranges in person.
Can I pay for my Marmoleum installation later?
Approved UK limited companies and LLPs can use Pay Later through iwocaPay, including 30 days interest-free after installation, 3 monthly payments interest-free, or up to 12 months with interest. See Pay Later options.
Why has my new linoleum floor gone yellow?
Don't worry, it's not you. It's a normal, temporary film called drying room film (or "ambering"), caused by the linseed oil curing during manufacture. It fades naturally once the floor is exposed to light, usually within a few weeks.
Is Marmoleum suitable for schools and healthcare?
Yes. Marmoleum is widely specified in schools, nurseries, hospitals, GP surgeries and care settings because it's hard-wearing, easy to clean and can be installed with hot-welded seams and coved skirting for a hygienic finish.

Found your Marmoleum fitters. Finally.
