How to fit Mohawk carpet tiles
Mohawk's EcoFlex backings are unusually tolerant — some of them can go down without the moisture testing other brands insist on. They also do FlexLok tabs, which let you fit a whole floor with no liquid adhesive.

What you’ll need to fit Mohawk carpet tiles
- Mohawk FlexLok tabs, or an approved carpet tile adhesive
- Sharp utility knife and spare blades
- Metal straight edge
- Tape measure and chalk line
- Knee pads
Before you start
24 hours to settle
Leave the tiles in the room for at least a day, at 15°C or warmer, with humidity below 65% if you can.
Store them flat
Straight piles, away from radiators, air conditioning and direct sunlight.
Prep the floor
Hard, flat, smooth, clean and dry. Old adhesive and levelling compound off first.
Underfloor heating off
Never above 27°C at the surface, and give the adhesive up to 72 hours before you turn the heating back on — then 5°C a day.
How to fit Mohawk carpet tiles, step by step
Find the centre of the room
Start as near the centre of the room as you can, choosing a point that gives you the biggest possible cut tiles at the edges. Chalk a line parallel to the main wall and a second at exactly 90°, squared with a 6-8-10 triangle.
Dry-lay a row first
Before any adhesive goes down, lay a loose row of tiles out to each wall. If the edge tiles would come out as thin slivers, shift your centre line over by half a tile.
Fix the tiles down
If you've got FlexLok tabs, stick one at every tile corner, plus one at any joint that meets a wall or a threshold. Long planks need an extra tab halfway down the long side. If you're using adhesive instead, spread it right up to within 1cm of the walls.
Check which way the tiles go
The arrows on the back set the direction. Mohawk support all-one-way, quarter turn, ashlar, herringbone, basketweave and random. If you're doing random, mix tiles from several boxes as you go — it blends the colour beautifully.
Work outwards from the middle
Start at the centre and build out in a staircase shape rather than straight rows. It keeps everything square and stops small errors adding up across the room.
Butt them up gently
Tiles should touch with no gap, but don't force them tight. Brush the pile back as you lay each one so nothing gets trapped in the joint.
Cut the edge tiles
Put the tile you're cutting face down on top of the last full tile, then put a third tile on top pushed against the skirting. Mark along its edge, cut through the back with a sharp knife, and fit it with the cut edge to the wall.
Press with your palm
Mohawk's technique: start at the lower corner of the tile and press it into place with an upward motion using the flat of your hand. Don't try to put both corners down at once.
Finish off
Fit a threshold strip in any doorway, vacuum the floor and put the furniture back. Carpet tiles can be walked on straight away.

The Mohawk bits that catch people out
The one-third offset rule
If you're laying an ashlar or brick pattern, Mohawk want each row offset by ONE THIRD of the tile, not one half. A half offset makes dark and light lines show up across the room.
FlexLok tabs need a new tab each time
If you lift a tile out, don't reuse the old tab — put a fresh one down.
Not for stairs
Mohawk are clear that carpet tiles with FlexLok tabs shouldn't go on stairs, ramps, or under heavy rolling loads.
EcoFlex ONE is very forgiving
This particular backing can be laid without the moisture and pH testing most tiles need, and even over old adhesive residue — as long as there's no visible damp.
Mistakes to avoid
- Using a half-tile offset instead of one third for ashlar patterns.
- Reusing FlexLok tabs after lifting a tile.
- Putting FlexLok-tabbed tiles on stairs.
- Dropping tiles in flat instead of pressing from the lower corner upwards.
- Using a non-approved adhesive, which affects the warranty.
Mohawk fitting questions, answered
What are Mohawk FlexLok tabs?
Dry, odourless double-sided tabs that go under the tile corners instead of adhesive. One at every corner, plus one at any joint next to a wall or threshold.
Do Mohawk carpet tiles need glue?
Not with FlexLok tabs. If you'd rather use adhesive, Mohawk want one of their approved products — other adhesives can affect the warranty.
What offset should I use for Mohawk carpet tiles?
For ashlar or brick patterns, offset each row by one third of a tile. Mohawk specifically advise against a half-tile offset because it creates visible banding.
Can Mohawk carpet tiles go on stairs?
Not with FlexLok tabs. Stairs need permanent adhesive and a proper nosing.
Do I need to test the floor for moisture with Mohawk tiles?
With their EcoFlex ONE and EcoFlex AIR backings, generally no — as long as there's no visible damp and the slab is over a month old. Other backings do need testing.
