How to fit Nouveau carpet tiles
Nouveau is our own range, so we know these tiles inside out. They're 50x50cm, they're forgiving, and they're the ones we'd point a first-timer at. Here's how to get a tidy job out of them.

- Sharp utility knife and plenty of spare blades
- Metal straight edge
- Tape measure and chalk line
- Carpet tile tackifier and a paint roller
- Knee pads
- Vacuum
Before you start
Check your boxes match
Every box has a batch number on it. Make sure they're all the same before you start cutting — different batches can be a shade apart.
Give them 24 hours
Leave the tiles in the room they're going in for at least a day so they settle to room temperature.
Work out how many you need
Most Nouveau ranges come 20 tiles to a box (5m²), though Basics comes 24 to a box (6m²). Measure your room, then add 10% for cuts.
Prep the floor
Clean, dry, flat and solid. Old carpet, vinyl and adhesive all come up first.
How to fit Nouveau carpet tiles, step by step
Find the centre of the room
Measure the middle of two opposite walls and snap a chalk line between them, then do the same the other way so you've got a cross in the centre. Never start against a wall — walls are never straight.
Dry-lay a row first
Before any adhesive goes down, lay a loose row of tiles out to each wall. If the edge tiles would come out as thin slivers, shift your centre line over by half a tile.
Fix the tiles down
Roll a thin, even coat of carpet tile tackifier over the floor with a paint roller and then wait. It must turn from milky white to clear and tacky before you lay anything — usually 20–60 minutes. Lay into it wet and the tiles are stuck for good.
Check which way the tiles go
There's an arrow on the back of every tile showing the pile direction. All arrows the same way gives a smooth, fitted-carpet look. Turning every other tile 90° gives a subtle checkerboard that hides marks and wear better.
Work outwards from the middle
Start at the centre and build out in a staircase shape rather than straight rows. It keeps everything square and stops small errors adding up across the room.
Butt them up gently
Tiles should touch with no gap, but don't force them tight. Brush the pile back as you lay each one so nothing gets trapped in the joint.
Cut the edge tiles
Put the tile you're cutting face down on top of the last full tile, then put a third tile on top pushed against the skirting. Mark along its edge, cut through the back with a sharp knife, and fit it with the cut edge to the wall.
Finish off
Fit a threshold strip in any doorway, vacuum the floor and put the furniture back. Carpet tiles can be walked on straight away.

The Nouveau bits that catch people out
They're 50x50cm, so the maths is easy
Four tiles to the square metre. Measure your room in metres, multiply length by width, multiply by four, add 10%.
Keep a few spares
One of the best things about tiles is that you can swap a damaged one out later. Keep half a box back in the loft — and keep it out of sunlight so it doesn't fade differently.
Underfloor heating is fine
Nouveau tiles work over underfloor heating. Turn it off 48 hours before you start and leave it off 48 hours after, then bring it back up gradually over a week.
Mistakes to avoid
- Laying into wet tackifier instead of waiting for it to go clear.
- Starting from a wall rather than the centre of the room.
- Mixing batch numbers without checking.
- Thin slivers of tile at the edges — they lift and they look wrong.
- Trapping pile in the joints. Brush it back as you go.
Nouveau fitting questions, answered
Do Nouveau carpet tiles need adhesive?
A tackifier, yes — a thin coat rolled over the floor that dries tacky rather than hard. It holds tiles in place but still lets you lift one out later.
How many Nouveau tiles are in a box?
Usually 20 tiles, which covers 5m². Nouveau Basics comes 24 to a box, covering 6m². Check the product page for the range you've picked.
Can I lay Nouveau carpet tiles over floorboards?
Not directly — overlay the boards with 6mm plywood or hardboard first, pinned down every 100–150mm, so the joints don't show through.
Which way round do Nouveau tiles go?
Follow the arrow on the back. All the same way for a seamless look, or turn every other tile 90° for a checkerboard that hides wear better.
Are Nouveau tiles OK for a home office?
Very much so — that's one of the most common uses. If you're on a wheeled chair, pick a range rated for castor chair use, or put a chair mat down.
