How to fit safety flooring
We'll be straight with you: safety flooring is the one type on this page we'd steer you away from doing yourself. Not because it's snobbery — because the slip resistance only works if the seams and edges are done right.

Before you start
Understand what you're buying
Safety flooring has grit built through the whole thickness to stop people slipping. It's used in kitchens, bathrooms, changing rooms, schools and care homes — anywhere wet feet meet hard floors.
The seams have to be welded
Every joint gets grooved out and a matching plastic rod melted into it with a hot air gun. That's what stops water getting underneath. Get the groove depth or the gun speed wrong and you either burn the vinyl or the weld doesn't fuse.
The edges usually get coved
In a wet area the vinyl curves up the wall about 100mm over a cove former and is finished with a capping strip, so there's no joint at floor level at all.
There's a liability angle
If this is a workplace or a public building, a badly fitted safety floor is a slip claim waiting to happen. It's worth having a certificate that says it was fitted properly.
How to fit safety flooring, step by step
Prepare the floor
Clean, dry, flat and smoothed. Any imperfection shows and any damp underneath will lift the floor.
Fit the cove formers
Where the floor turns up the wall, a triangular former is stuck into the wall/floor angle first, with mitred corners.
Template and cut
The sheet is templated, cut and dry-fitted, including the material that runs up the wall.
Spread adhesive and lay
Half at a time, into the correct adhesive for the product, then rolled thoroughly both ways.
Form the coving
The vinyl is warmed and worked up over the former, and the top edge is finished with a capping strip or tucked into a groove.
Leave the adhesive to set
At least 24 hours before any welding, or the heat makes the adhesive bubble.
Groove the seams
A grooving tool cuts a channel along each joint to a controlled depth — not all the way through.
Weld the seams
The weld rod is melted into the groove at a steady speed. Too slow burns it, too fast and it doesn't fuse.
Trim the weld
Trimmed in two passes — once while it's warm, once when it's cooled — so it finishes flush with the floor.

Mistakes to avoid
- Treating it like normal vinyl and leaving the seams unwelded — water gets under and the floor fails.
- Welding too soon after gluing, which bubbles the adhesive.
- Grooving too deep and cutting straight through the vinyl.
- Moving the welding gun too fast, so the rod sits in the groove without fusing.
- Polishing safety flooring. Polish fills the grit and destroys the slip resistance.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fit safety flooring myself?
Honestly, no — not if it needs welded seams or coved edges, which most installations do. If it's a single sheet in a small room with no joints and no wet-area requirement, it's closer to normal sheet vinyl, but it's still a careful job.
Why does safety flooring have to be welded?
The grit that makes it slip resistant means it's used where there's water. An unwelded seam lets water underneath, which lifts the floor and can rot the subfloor.
What is coving on a safety floor?
It's where the vinyl curves up the wall instead of stopping at a skirting board. It means there's no gap at floor level for water or dirt to get into, which is why kitchens and hospitals use it.
Can you clean safety flooring with a mop?
Yes, but never polish it. Polish sits in the grit and takes the slip resistance away, which defeats the whole point.
