St Francis College

St Francis' College in Letchworth Garden City came to us needing a full refresh of its worn carpet tiles across classrooms and corridors. With pupils and staff due back in September, the work had to be planned around one fixed deadline: everything finished and ready before the start of the new school year.

After surveying the site in July, our team scheduled the installation for the last fortnight of the summer holidays. We began by uplifting the old carpet tiles across around 672m² of the college, with all of the old flooring taken away for disposal and recycling rather than left for the school to deal with.

With the old flooring up, we got to work on the concrete subfloor. Around 50m² needed priming and screeding to give a smooth, level base, which is the part of the job nobody sees afterwards but that makes the biggest difference to how long a floor lasts. We then laid new carpet tiles throughout, including around 158m² of busy corridor space where hard-wearing tiles really earn their keep.

Alongside the carpet, we replaced a smaller area of vinyl, around 13m², finished with 12 linear metres of cap and cove skirting. Coving the vinyl up the wall leaves no hard corner for dirt to collect in, so it's easy to clean and hygienic, which is ideal for the areas of a school that see spills and heavy use.

Our fitters also took care of moving classroom furniture out of the way and back again across more than 500m² of the site, so staff didn't have to clear rooms themselves before the start of term. The installation ran from 18 to 31 August, and the project was signed off in early September, with the college ready for pupils on their first day back.
